Special Voyage Inspection is required in the following cases where a ship that does not have a Ship Inspection Certificate is intended to be temporarily used for navigation.
When a Japanese ship is shipped to a foreign country for the purpose of transferring it to a person who is unable to own it.
When the ship is being sailed to a place where the ship is modified, maintained or dismantled, or where the ship undergoes inspection or certification pursuant to law, or where gross tonnage is measured pursuant to the Ship Law or the Boat Registration Law.
When a ship that does not have a Ship Inspection Certificate is temporarily used for navigation due to unavoidable reasons.
If the ship passes the inspection, a Special Voyage Permit will be issued. In addition, if the purpose of a temporary navigation permit is for sea trials or voyages, etc., a Special Voyage Permit can be issued multiple times for up to 30 days per certificate. However, if the purpose is to transport passengers/freight or tow, etc., it cannot be issued for a period exceeding 30 days in total in one year from January 1st to December 31st.
*As a general rule, you must have a thorough meeting with the JG ship inspector before starting the Special Voyage Inspection. If you have any questions or concerns regarding individual procedures, please feel free to contact us.
